Happy couple with pregnancy news

There are two main types of pregnancy tests: At-home tests and laboratory tests. If you miss your period or you have any other reason to believe you might be pregnant, you can take an at-home pregnancy test. These are available over the counter (OTC), and they provide quick results, but they aren’t as accurate as lab tests. If your OTC pregnancy test is positive, you’ll need to go to a walk-in clinic to have a lab test done.

All urine tests for pregnancy, whether done at home or at the family medicine clinic, work by detecting trace amounts of a hormone in the urine. This hormone, called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), is only produced by the body when pregnancy has occurred. It’s important to note that if the test is performed too early, it may give a false negative result because pregnancy doesn’t occur right away after sex. It can take about a week for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus, and the hCG hormone will only begin building up after that point.

Paramount Urgent Care provides numerous onsite labs and tests, including pregnancy testing, at our walk-in clinics in the Orlando area. Serving all of Orlando, Lake, Polk, Sumter, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. Please visit our contact us page for a location near you or call 352-674-9218.
